Snooker legend ‘Big Bill’ Verbeniuk reached the semi-finals of the World Championship four times, but is perhaps best known for his infamous antics at the tables. He once drank 76 cans of beer during a match, creating what was once described as the “jar of the century”. Nowadays, it is common to see professionals drinking a cup of water or tea during a match, but Berbenjuk drank during his matches, often downing a pint after each shot.
But at one game in the 1970s, he cleaned out 76 boxes in one game and then proceeded to drink for seven hours into the night. This was a match against John Spencer early in his career in Australia. However, the reason I was able to consume so much alcohol was because of the hypoglycemia. This condition occurs when blood sugar (glucose) levels fall below normal limits and is often associated with diabetes. This usually happens when people with diabetes use too much insulin, skip meals, or exercise too much. Verbeniuk burns alcohol and sugar so quickly that it can consume amounts of alcohol that could cause harm to others. He also had a family history of benign tumors, which led doctors to recommend he drink.
