In a recent setback for the Premier League contenders, Southampton will be missing one of their main players when they meet Liverpool this weekend.
Following the international break, the Reds will travel to St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon for a top-versus-bottom match on the south coast.
Although Liverpool, led by Arne Slot, should win easily on paper, English football’s unpredictability should serve as a warning.
With the home match against Manchester City on December 1st, followed by difficult journeys to Newcastle on December 4th and Everton on December 7th, a win for the Reds is crucial to maintaining their five-point lead.
According to the Daily Echo, centre-back Jan Bednarek will undoubtedly miss Southampton’s match on Sunday due to a knee ligament injury sustained while playing for his country.
The 28-year-old was sent off during Poland’s 5-1 away loss to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League last Friday after landing awkwardly following a confrontation with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Bednarek is immediately ruled out of the Liverpool match as he is predicted to miss approximately three weeks of activity.
According to WhoScored, the Pole started all 11 Premier League games this season and completed 93.9% of his passes, thus this is a major setback for Southampton.
Meawnhile, FootMob observes that only Taylor Harwood-Bellis (1.5) has averaged more blocks per 90 minutes than Bednarek (1.3), who has completed more long balls per game (3.3) than any of his colleagues.
However, Bednarek is by no means Southampton’s only injury issue; winger Ryan Fraser and custodian Aaron Ramsdale are all doubtful for the match against Liverpool.
As Martin’s issues worsen, Gavin Bazunu (keeper), Will Smallbone (midfield), Flynn Downes (midfield) and Ross Stewart (striker) are also undoubtedly absent.
Russell Martin’s life is made even more difficult by the fact that the Saints are currently at the bottom of the table without a victory, despite having Bednarek on the team.
Since Harwood-Bellis, a recent England rookie, is under a lot of pressure to lead the back line at the age of just 22, his expertise at the centre of the defence would have been essential against Liverpool.
