Southampton ‘eyeing’ Jason Steele transfer swoop
With Alex McCarthy’s contract expiring at the end of this month, Southampton will need to add more goalkeepers this summer.
The Saints recently disclosed through their retained list that they are still in negotiations with McCarthy and Adams over a possible extension.
However, reporter Martin Sanders just disclosed on X that Southampton is ‘eyeing’ a summer transfer agreement for Brighton custodian Steele.
The 33-year-old, who was previously at Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough, played in 17 Premier League games last year, conceding 34 goals while maintaining two clean sheets.
One Southampton player could leave as a result of Jason Steele’s move.
With 358 career appearances and 91 clean sheets to his name, Steele would provide expertise to the Saints goalkeeping ranks upon his arrival.
If Steele shows up, he and Gavin Bazunu will probably compete for the top slot the following time around, and it might also indicate that McCarthy moves on.
Ahead of the summer transfer window, McCarthy has a number of alluring choices available to him, and this most recent Steele claim may indicate that McCarthy will be departing this summer.
Steele, who has frequently played as a no. 2, could be a suitable replacement for the seasoned McCarthy; his recent ascent to the Brighton no. 1 position may indicate that he still has a lot to provide.
But in what will undoubtedly be a hectic transfer window for the Saints, Southampton still needs to add some more Premier League calibre and perhaps some youthfulness as well.
