SAINTS player Joe Aribo made a joke about Flynn Downes “daydreaming” in midfield since he is so excellent when he plays with Will Smallbone. When Saints won promotion back to the Premier League, the three of them made up a formidable unit in the middle of the park. The trio participated in all three of Southampton’s play-off matches, which ended with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United in the championship match. Academy hero Smallbone was a standout in the opposition box, setting up Adam Armstrong at Wembley and scoring against West Brom. “Yeah, well, the other two, they’re amazing,” Aribo stated in an interview with the Daily Echo.
“I mean, sometimes I’m on the pitch and I’m just watching them and I just get lost,” he laughed. “I can’t stop fantasizing when watching them because they’re that amazing. “Everyone has so much energy that comes in and goes out of possession. Playing with them is awesome.”
Flynn Downes might make a comeback for the Saints in the Premier League, and Smallbone and Aribo will likely be crucial players once more. The West Ham United loanee will be pursued permanently by manager Russell Martin, but a fee must be agreed upon with the Hammers. During the previous season’s relegation, Aribo came and went from the team, and Smallbone was away on loan at Stoke City.
