Southampton have returned to the Premier League.

The south-coast club secured their top-flight status by defeating Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley on Sunday, just a year after their relegation.

Having been a fixture in the Premier League for a decade before dropping down in 2023, Southampton aim to re-establish themselves quickly. To achieve this, an active summer transfer window is essential. Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, suggested that Matt O’Riley is a potential target for Southampton.

Interestingly, Tottenham Hotspur has also shown strong interest in O’Riley.

Southampton’s Interest in Matt O’Riley

Jones discussed the £25m midfielder and Southampton’s interest.

“I expect them to try and sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic. He will likely be a top target, as Russell Martin already knows him,” Jones said.

“I’ve heard from a source that if Southampton got promoted, O’Riley would be their target. O’Riley likely prefers staying in the Premier League and wants to take that next step if he leaves Celtic.”

O’Riley Ready for the Premier League

Regardless of whether he joins Southampton, Tottenham, or another club, it appears O’Riley is ready for a Premier League move.

The midfielder has had an excellent season with Celtic and is poised to test himself at a higher level.

Joining Southampton could offer O’Riley more first-team opportunities under a familiar manager, while moving to Spurs might provide the chance to play European football and compete at the highest levels.

It will be interesting to see where O’Riley lands after his impressive season with Celtic.
