Saints need a win over East Fife and a favorable result at Cappielow to advance to the last-16 of the Premier Sports Cup.
St Johnstone’s midweek loss to League One part-timers Alloa was a game that those on the sidelines were glad to miss. However, the Perth winger, who is about to make his 100th appearance for the club against East Fife on Saturday, is determined that, unlike last season, one poor cup performance doesn’t set a worrying precedent for Saints’ league campaign.
Advancing to the last-16 of the Premier Sports Cup is out of their hands, but putting in a strong performance and winning their final group game is still within their control.
“Tuesday wasn’t easy to watch from the bench,” said Wright. “There were no positives to take from the game.
“All we can do now is try to make things right against East Fife. The manager was quite critical afterwards, which I think is necessary sometimes.
“Now we’re hoping for another result to go our way, which isn’t ideal since we were in a strong position after the first two games.”
“This competition hasn’t gone well for us in the past couple of years. That’s obviously not good enough.
“I was involved last year, and it gave us a slightly negative vibe going into the league season.
“Tuesday’s setback can spill over if things don’t go our way this weekend—it would be back to square one.
“However, if things go right, we get the result, a good performance, and qualify by winning the group, then there are positive signs going into the Aberdeen game.”
