St. Paul native, Dallas lead assistant Sean Sweeney previews series vs. Timberwolves

Sean Sweeney, new candidate for the Utah Jazz bench

Darren “Doogie” Wolfson speaks with Sean Sweeney, the head man for the Mavericks and a native of St. Paul.

Sean Sweeney, a native of St. Paul, is the guy in charge of the Dallas Mavericks’ defensive strategies, which have made them one of the best in the league since the All-Star break. He serves as lead assistant to head coach Jason Kidd.

The Timberwolves and Dallas will square off in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

2006 saw Sweeney graduate from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.), where he played guard for three years, captained the team, and was named All-Conference. After graduating from Cretin-Derham Hall High School, he played as a teammate for MLB Hall of Famer Joe Mauer with the Raiders.

Sweeney and our Darren “Doogie” Wolfson had a Zoom conversation.

Sweeney has conducted interviews for positions as head coach, notably with the Utah Jazz. It appears that leading a team is a matter of when rather than if he will have the chance. In the meanwhile, he and Kidd work really well together. Before Dallas, they collaborated with the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.

Sweeney previously worked for the Pistons in Detroit.
