If the 29-year-old fulfills an appearance-related stipulation, his contract, which extended into a third season, will be renewed. He was a star of the Championship play-offs the previous season. Mowatt was a dependable player who made 48 appearances for Carlos Corberan’s team during the previous season.
The three players who were offered a new contract were him, Kyle Bartley, and Cedric Kipre, the defensive tandem. Kipre is expected to leave the team, and Bartley is rumored to be signing a new deal with Mowatt after the two returned to the team for testing late last week.
Hull, Albion’s Championship opponents, are rumored to have expressed interest in Yorkshireman Mowatt this summer as a free agent. The captain of Barnsley and a former graduate of the Leeds academy reached the Championship play-offs for the third time, having done so with the Tykes and Middlesbrough, where he played for a season in 2022–2023 while on loan from The Hawthorns. Mowatt thinks Albion and he can make a comparable impact the following season. He declared: “I’m thrilled to be staying, and as soon as the previous season ended, I made up my mind.”
Although it has taken a while, I’m glad to have finished it because I adore this place. I get along pretty well with everyone, including the players and all of the staff members.
“I really enjoyed last season. It was one of my favourites during my time in football so it was a no-brainer to extend and go again this year. “That’s three times in the play-offs now for me, but it’s always nice to be in and around those places. We’ve got a strong group, some good players and with a few new signings as well I can’t see why we can’t be in and around it again.” It has been a productive few days for the Baggies after players returned for pre-season testing and training late last week.
The club’s first summer acquisition was Malian midfielder Ousmane Diakite, who will face competition from Mowatt and others for a starting spot. Torbjorn Heggem, a defender from Norway, is expected to follow.
Josh Griffiths, 22, a goalkeeper, also agreed to a two-year contract extension with his boyhood team. Mowatt is a leader in his locker room and a “increasingly important” part of Albion’s team, according to manager Corberan. “I’m thrilled that Alex has pledged his future to the team,” Corberan exclaimed. I do not have to introduce him; he is a player. I have no doubts about his character or football abilities because of his enormous dedication to the team last year, when he played in practically every game and helped us secure a spot in the play-offs.
He is becoming a more vital member of the team and is still developing as a leader both on and off the field.
