Later today, QPR will play West Brom at Loftus Road as they kick off their 2024–25 Championship campaign.
With formidable opponents, QPR is hoping to get off to a strong start in the opening match of the new campaign.
With a top boss in Marti Cifuentes at the helm, it is hoped the club can make further inroads up the Championship table this year. He led them to safety after a dismal start under Gareth Ainsworth and is widely tipped to help them maintain and upward trajectory.
Although the R’s have had some success in the transfer window, there are still some holes in the squad that need to be filled. The big additions are Jonathan Varane and Zan Celar, but Paul Nardi, Liam Morrison, Heverrton, and Daniel Bennie also seem like wise choices.
Even though the preseason ended with four straight losses without a goal, three of those games took place against Premier League teams. Cifuentes’ side ought to have gained something from the experience.
News from the QPR team
Even though it was thought that QPR would breeze through the preseason, Cifuentes appears to have a few problems heading into opening day of play. Due to a back injury, Ilias Chair has played less this summer and is doubtful for the West Brom match. Lyndon Dykes has also experienced an issue.
fresh signee It might take Jonathan Varane a bit longer to adjust to life after Sporting Gijon. It remains to be seen, though, whether he can still make his competitive debut for the team—possibly in a substitute role.
Along with Chair and Dykes, Morgan Fox did not participate in the last preseason match against Brighton; nevertheless, QPR manager Cifuentes has stated that the latter two are the most likely to play.
Nardi; Dunne, Cook, Clarke-Salter, Paal; Field, Colback; Smyth, Andersen, Kolli; Celar.
fresh signee The overwhelming favorite to start in goal is Nardi, while Cifuentes will probably stick with the QPR back four that helped him win the game as long as he can. Kenneth Paal and Jake Clarke-Salter are both interested in other things. While Varane recovers to full fitness, Sam Field and Jack Colback will probably start in midfield, but Elijah Dixon-Bonner is an additional choice. Lucas Andersen will probably be right in front of them. It appears improbable that Chair will fit on the left. Rayan Kolli, a young sensation who played a significant role for QPR in the preseason, might get a chance to start in the starting lineup.
Paul Smyth will be the favored choice on the opposing flank, but adding another winger would be beneficial. If Dykes isn’t considered ready, it will be between Celar and Michael Frey up top.
