Ashley Phillips’ loan spell at Stoke City hasn’t gone as planned so far, but the young centre-back will be hoping for a change in his fortunes soon. With time still left in the season, Phillips will be eager to turn things around and make a positive impact for the Potters.
Phillips was a standout performer for Plymouth Argyle last season, playing a crucial role in securing the club’s Championship status. When he joined Stoke on loan in the summer, many at Spurs anticipated that he would continue to develop and become a key player for the Potters.
However, that hasn’t materialized for the 20-year-old so far, as he has only made one appearance in the Championship and two in the League Cup this season.
Frustrating week
Phillips returned from his concussion last week, hoping to seize his opportunity, but it didn’t quite happen. The Tottenham loanee remained an unused substitute in Stoke’s midweek victory over Portsmouth and their subsequent 0-0 draw against Swansea over the weekend.
As it stands, the Blackburn Academy graduate appears to have some work ahead of him to earn a place in manager Narcis Pelach’s plans.
Chance to impress over the international break
Phillips will be pleased with the international break, as he has been selected for England’s elite squad for their upcoming matches against Italy and Czechia. The centre-back is joined by fellow Spurs teammates Will Lankshear, Dane Scarlett, and Luca Gunter, and he will be eager to gain some valuable playing time during this period.
