The £13 million player who ‘changed’ Unai Emery’s Aston Villa is set to join Nottingham Forest.

The move of Alex Moreno, defender for Aston Villa, to Nottingham Forest is almost complete.

Widespread reports say the Spaniard is set for a medical with the Reds today, ahead of what would be a loan with an option to buy.

What type of player—and person—are Forest acquiring, then? This is what John Townley, an Aston Villa reporter for BirminghamLive, told us.

Why are Villa letting Moreno leave?

JT: Villa had three senior left-backs after Ian Maatsen arrived back in June. Despite receiving interest from other teams, Lucas Digne is unwilling to leave despite having had his finest season yet with the team. As a result, Moreno had few opportunities to play this season. It makes sense for Villa to let him go now that he is 31 years old and has fewer than two years left on his contract. The agreement that Forest has in place will still be better for Villa than it would be when he has 12 months left on his contract the following summer, even though Forest only has the option to buy.

What is his Premier League record?

JT: He joined Villa in January 2023 and made an instant impact under Emery. You could quite easily make the case that he was one of the best left-backs in the Premier League in the second half of the 2022/23 season. He transformed how Villa played down the left side as he essentially played as a winger to create overloads on the flank with Jacob Ramsey.

He picked up a bad hamstring injury in Villa’s penultimate game of that campaign which ruled him out of pre-season and first weeks of last season. He then suffered a few more niggles over the past year, allowing Digne to establish himself as the first choice left-back despite Moreno’s excellent form in the previous season.
