Before his career took a leftfield turn, he was just about to win a Pompey deal.

Three years ago, Corey Addai’s dreams of playing for Fratton were shattered by an unsuccessful medical exam.

Addai was excellent last night as Crawley easily defeated MK Dons 3-0 in the play-offs, thanks to his clean sheet and ball-playing prowess.

The keeper was caught off guard when midfielder Liam Kelly sent a stunning backpass towards Addai. However, Kelly then skillfully took a few yards beyond his goal line, leaving striker Max Dean for dead and almost giving Crawley a chance.

The 6′ 4″ man has received a lot of attention as a result, and his manager Scott Lindsey has confirmed that the incident was not accidental.

“We have Corey in all of the keep-ball sessions, and he’s as good as any outfield player with his feet,” he said to Sky Sports.

Given that Addai’s Pompey affiliation lasted just three preseason friendly prior to the 2021–22 season, many supporters may have overlooked it.

After being released by Barnsley, the custodian showed up for training with Danny Cowley’s team, performing well enough for the former Pompey manager to give him a contract.

But the Londoner’s opportunity to compete against Gavin Bazunu and Alex Bass in goal was ended by health issues.

Instead, Addai secured a transfer to the Danish top division, where he played for Esbjerg fB for a season before making his way back to the United States to play at Broadfield Stadium.

The custodian went on to establish himself in West Sussex, playing in two campaigns and totaling 77 appearances.

This season, there’s optimism for a thrilling finish at Wembley as Crawley, an underdog, made it into the League Two play-offs on the last day.

They did not follow that up with a convincing first-leg victory over MK Dons, the former Pompey defender Mike Williamson’s team, with the rematch scheduled for this Saturday.
