Although there had been rumours about it for a while, the agreement Wakefield Trinity was pursuing was actually months in the making.
Given their calibre and notoriety, it’s reasonable to argue that Wakefield made equally important captures with the signatures of Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken. However, the club had always considered Johnstone to be their top target, in part because to the strong emotional bond that exists between Trinity and Johnstone.
And that’s how they managed to close the deal.
Although Johnstone felt obliged to leave Wakefield in order to advance his career, he really never wanted to go in the first place. He was an aspirational winger and the crown jewel of Trinity at the time of his departure, but the club was having trouble competing. Johnstone desired prizes and the opportunity to compete for them.
Crucially, it was about persuading the England international of your ambition. Long before a ball was ever kicked this season, Wakefield had already identified Johnstone and McMeeken. Nevertheless, they were unable to formally approach or finalise any contract until after the anti-tampering deadline of May 1, according to club sources who spoke with Love Rugby League.
However, things didn’t really get serious until Johnstone told Catalans early in the 2024 season that he wanted to move back to England to be nearer to his family.
Although May 1st is the official deadline for clubs to sign players, there are few exceptions, such as Leeds and Ryan Hall. Hull KR had notified Hall that he would not be getting a contract for 2025, and Leeds had the authority to enter early and make the announcement prior to the May 1 deadline with Rovers’ consent.
And when Wakefield was given permission to express their interest in Johnstone’s management, they did so right away as clubs began to take notice.
Additionally, although Daryl Powell’s influence as head coach was important, the arrival of new owner Matt Ellis was crucial to the outcome.
Ellis presented the Johnstone family with a short- and long-term vision. Regarding how Wakefield will now strive to compete for big honours at their newly restored stadium rather than languish at the basement of the Super League. What was offered for the club’s future, both on and off the pitch, impressed them.
According to reports, that convinced Johnstone—who was being pursued by other clubs—that returning to Wakefield was the best course of action. According to club insiders, both parties took the occasion to express their love for rugby league.
Johnstone desired to rejoin an English team that shared Catalans’ aspirations to be a trophy contender. He might have gone somewhere else if it hadn’t been made clear in his discussions with the club.
Additionally, Wakefield conducted research on Johnstone as they would have any other player, and they were impressed with how he seemed to have moved past the injury issues he had during his first stint at Trinity.
Ultimately, the agreement proved to be simple enough to finalise, which is why it was revealed so quickly. In 2025, one of Wakefield’s most beloved sons will be wearing the red, white, and blue of Trinity once more.
