Ryley Towler has marked a visit to his boyhood club as his Championship red letter day.
After winning League One, the Pompey favourite confessed that returning to Bristol City is something he is looking forward to next season.
Towler was in the centre of Lincoln City’s final-day celebrations, having returned to John Mousinho’s starting lineup for the 2-0 victory at Sincil Bank.
The 21-year-old has played little football this season, but he has expressed his satisfaction at Fratton Park as he works his way up the ranks.
The Pompey football operation shares this assessment, with the talented defender regarded as a player with a promising future at PO4.
Towler is part of Mousinho’s future ambitions, as he hopes to compete for a starting position in his back four next season.
That is something the 2023 signing is looking forward to, although the clubs dropping out of the Premier League are not on his radar until the fixtures are revealed in June.
The likeable talent is looking forward to returning to his old haunts at Ashton Gate.
He said, ‘I can’t wait for next season, I truly can’t.
‘And going back to Bristol City will be fantastic. I adore it there. This is my hometown club. I grew up supporting them, and it will be fantastic to meet some familiar faces.
‘That’s the first one I’ll look into when the fixtures are released. I’ll be on the lookout for that right immediately; I can’t wait to return there.
Towler will compete with Regan Poole, Tom McIntyre, and Conor Shaughnessy for a spot in Mousinho’s backline next season, while Sean Raggett’s future is uncertain.
The former AFC Wimbledon player is aware that he has a difficult battle, but he may take comfort in the knowing that his head coach and staff see him as a player with significant Pompey potential.
He said: “I know there will be competition, and as a footballer, you need it. You have to compete for positions at the end of the day; it will only help us become stronger players.
