The manager of Sunderland acknowledges that he “never” even thought about playing for the Black Cats.

Despite intense interest, a manager has recently acknowledged he hasn’t even thought about joining Sunderland. Sunderland has been searching for a new manager for more than three months, but they don’t appear to be any closer to making an appointment.

Will Still has been connected to the Black Cats, much like they did before Christmas, and it appeared that he would be their top priority. Weeks have swiftly gone by, though, and reports now state that it appears “increasingly unlikely” that the 31-year-old will be appointed. Sunderland has had a horrible week as they may have lost out on targets like Still, Bo Svensson, and Paul Heckingbottom to other teams.

Sheffield Wednesday has now revealed that Danny Rohl has inked a new four-year contract, adding even more salt to the wounds. Since Sunderland fired Michael Beale in February, the German has consistently been on the team’s radar, and Wednesday’s impending relegation made it appear imminent. Nevertheless, the Owls managed to stay up and now have him restrained, leaving Sunderland unsure of their next appointment.

Though Rohl’s recent remarks have made it apparent that they were never even close to getting him to the Stadium of Light, it still feels like the Wearside team has lost out on him.

Danny Rohl was never going to join Sunderland

I never considered going anywhere other than Hillsborough. The fans have been amazing and have been nothing but friendly to me and my staff since day one, so I feel right at home here.

“I want to express my gratitude to the chairman for this chance, and we are now eager to anticipate and collaborate on plans for the upcoming season.”

Sunderland’s snail pace has cost them in the manager race

Sunderland couldn’t really do much to tempt Danny Rohl if he never really had any intention of leaving Sheffield Wednesday.

However, that isn’t the reason why the club is now coming under criticism.

The board are now being ridiculed because they have had over three months to identify their target, hold talks with him and appoint him.

The season has now been over for three weeks and in that time, Hull, Plymouth and Norwich have lost their managers, while the likes of Burnley, Ipswich, Leicester could all soon be searching for their own head coach too.

Sunderland had a window of opportunity where they could snap up their main target as soon as the season ended, but they have dragged it on and now it feels like they will be very far behind when it comes to winning the race for a manager.

It’s another disaster-class again for the club, who really only had one chance left after the Michael Beale fiasco.
