The sellable verdict for Jack Butland is dropped amid the Rangers’ admission of “big shock.”

Rangers selling Jack Butland would be a “big shock” and the club have to weigh up the fact he is “sellable” against how it would look to supporters, Scott Allan has said.

The former Celtic midfielder, a boyhood Gers fan, insists the goalkeeper is a player the club must keep despite the temptation of recouping a sizeable fee, and that offloading Butland would send a harmful message to the fanbase.

Butland is thought to be the most valuable player in Philippe Clement’s roster, and the manager has acknowledged that the team has to sell before adding other players. During PLZ Soccer’s Football Show on August 7, Allan said to presenter Peter Martin, “Butland, as a goalkeeper, it’s such an important position in your team.” When they are attempting to construct anything, how does it appear to the fans? To me, that would be quite shocking.

At a Rangers or Celtics game, especially, striking a balance between being marketable and staying connected to your fan base and the team’s direction is crucial. Butland must remain with the Rangers despite his market value. The majority of Rangers supporters will undoubtedly agree with Allan when he says that although Clement may bolster important areas elsewhere by selling Butland, his departure would deplete the team.

The impact of the England international last season, which earned him multiple Team of the Year selections, cannot be understated. It is unsettling to think of how terrible things could have gotten for the Light Blues if Butland had not been the reassuring presence in goal.

Only Nottingham Forest has made inquiries about the stopper thus far, despite his performances creating connections south of the border [Daily Record, 7 August]; the attempt was promptly rejected.

The Gers supporters may have been displeased with Gareth Southgate’s decision to ignore calls for the player to return to the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 since it could have raised doubts in his mind.

With three years left on his contract, Butland is content in Glasgow and continues to provide Clement and those at Ibrox with a solid hand.
