A significant advantage has been given to Sunderland in their search for a new manager. More than three months after Michael Beale’s dismissal, Sunderland has suffered in their search for a long-term replacement.
Mike Dodds was named the Black Cats’ temporary coach until the end of the campaign, but his replacement has not yet been named. Rene Maric, Danny Rohl, and Bo Svensson are just a few of the players the club has been linked to thus far. However, it appears that all three have either signed new contracts or will take up positions elsewhere. Since before Christmas, Sunderland has been interested in Will Still, and his unexpected departure from Reims this month raises the possibility that they may finally land their primary target.
The 31-year-old has reportedly held discussions regarding the Norwich City opening, but he hasn’t yet signed with Sunderland. Hull, Burnley, and Norwich are among the teams searching for managers this summer, therefore the Black Cats wanted to sign Still up very away.
It seemed, however, that they were not fast enough; according to recent sources, the club’s chances of landing their man were now “increasingly unlikely.”
Norwich City turn attention away from Will Still
There has been no update since, however Norwich’s recent activity could be a boost for Sunderland.
According to journalist John Percy, the Canaries are now set to appoint FC Nordsjaelland manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Percy wrote on X: “Norwich set to complete the appointment of FC Nordsjælland manager Johannes Hoff Thorup this week. Thorup expected to finalise contract in the next 48 hours, with Norwich also paying compensation. Has always been the #1 choice for sporting director Ben Knapper.”
Does this mean Sunderland are back on track?
The fact that Still’s most recent news came just a few days after he had discussions with Norwich gave the impression that they would be the team that Sunderland would lose to. But Thorup’s approaching arrival might help the Black Cats in their attempt to entice Still in. The former Reims coach could still be the target of many other teams, and there might be a lot of problems going on that we’re just unaware of.
However, this may be our only opportunity to bring Still in, and if we make a mistake now, who knows what will happen in the coming months? Despite the fact that we are getting up to 100 days without a permanent management, the board appears to be behaving as though the summer is a time for leisure.
