Watford head coach Tom Cleverley has reflected on the unique type of fatigue he has experienced since transitioning from player to coach. He compared the mental tiredness from his coaching responsibilities, such as spending time behind a desk and handling paperwork, to the physical exhaustion of being on the pitch.
Cleverley noted that while footballers use their brains on the field, the mental demands of being a head coach, particularly with administrative tasks, are different. He emphasized how coaching leads to more mental fatigue compared to the physical strain players feel during pre-season.
Reflecting on his first few months as Watford boss, Cleverley said, “I think it’s a good bit of insight that we as coaches can give that you do get more mentally tired than when you’re playing.”
He explained that the period from the start of pre-season planning on June 1 until the international break on September 1 was particularly demanding. During that time, especially with the transfer window in full swing, the coaching staff worked tirelessly.
Cleverley appreciated the break after a busy few months and believes it came at the perfect moment for both staff and players. “We’re refreshed now, we’ve pressed the reset button and we’re ready to attack the next block of games,” he said.
Despite the mental strain of coaching, Cleverley acknowledged that the seasonal rhythm is familiar to him, having lived this routine for the past 16 years as a player. Now, as a coach, he is prepared to navigate the relentless winter schedule ahead, while also recognizing the importance of rest breaks throughout the season.
