Latest Update on Western Bulldogs Trade
The Western Bulldogs are navigating a busy trade period as they look to bolster their squad following a challenging 2024 AFL season. After finishing outside the finals this year, the club is focused on securing key players and reinforcing their depth to return to contention next season.
One of the primary targets for the Bulldogs is Gold Coast Suns defender Esava Ratugolea. The club has been in negotiations with the Suns for the versatile key-position player, who is keen on making the move to Whitten Oval. Ratugolea’s ability to play in both defensive and forward roles makes him an ideal fit for the Bulldogs, who struggled at times in 2024 with key positions, especially in the backline. The Suns are seeking a substantial trade return for Ratugolea, which could see the Bulldogs offer up draft picks or a player swap.
The Bulldogs are also involved in discussions around securing North Melbourne midfielder Ben McKay. McKay has been linked with multiple clubs, including the Bulldogs, who view him as a solution to their midfield depth issues. With Marcus Bontempelli and Jack Macrae carrying much of the workload, McKay’s inclusion could bring some much-needed relief and versatility to the team’s midfield rotation. However, the Bulldogs are facing stiff competition from rivals such as Hawthorn, who are also pursuing McKay.
Another key player in the Bulldogs’ trade activity is Bailey Smith. Rumors have been swirling that Smith could be on his way out of the club after expressing interest in a trade. Smith, who missed the entire 2024 season due to an ACL injury, has attracted attention from teams like Geelong, Hawthorn, and Collingwood. The Bulldogs are determined to hold onto the fan-favorite, but with Smith seeking a fresh start, a trade may be inevitable. Talks are ongoing, and a resolution is expected soon.
In addition to these high-profile moves, the Bulldogs are looking to add depth to their ruck stocks and forward line. With veteran players nearing the end of their careers, the club is keen on bringing in fresh talent to support Tim English in the ruck and Aaron Naughton up forward.
As trade discussions progress, the Western Bulldogs remain one of the more active clubs in the AFL trade window, aiming to retool for a stronger showing in 2025.
