Transfer to Southampton to be announced on Tuesday

According to sources in Portugal, Southampton is expected to announce the signing of a midfielder from Sporting CP on Tuesday. The player, Mateus Fernandes, arrived on the South Coast on Sunday to undergo a medical.

Portuguese media reports that Fernandes has already said his goodbyes to his Sporting CP teammates and traveled to England on Sunday. He will have his medical today, with the club hoping to officially unveil him on Tuesday.

Fernandes, who recently turned 20, spent last season on loan at Estoril. He made 25 starts and 3 substitute appearances for Estoril, scoring one goal and providing two assists. His performances during the loan spell increased his value to around £10 million.

Southampton, among other clubs, took notice of Fernandes, and it is reported that Saints have paid approximately £12.8 million plus £4 million in potential add-ons for him. Sporting CP will also receive 10% of any profit if Fernandes is sold by Southampton in the future.

Before his loan spell, Fernandes had made about 10 appearances for Sporting CP’s first team, including in European competitions. Primarily a central midfielder, he can also play in attacking or defensive roles. While his signing might not initially excite Southampton supporters, he has the potential to prove valuable.
