Even though the Old Gold lost their late match against Newcastle United, one Wolves player is getting a lot of praise.
For Wolves, it was more of a game of four quarters as Gary O’Neil’s team collapsed late against Newcastle. It was a game of two halves.
In just five minutes, the Old Gold’s 1-0 advantage was reversed as two incredible goals from the visitors undid all of the host’s diligent effort.
Given the difficulty of the Premier League games ahead of Wolves, a defeat was the last thing the team wanted, but even with the loss, there should be hope.
Joao Gomes earns high praise from Paul Merson despite Newcastle defeat
Mario Lemina’s goal, which he scored after a brilliant move, was the highlight of the game from Wolves’ perspective.
Joao Gomes won possession of the ball in midfield first, which gave Matheus Cunha the opportunity to carry it and then find Jorgen Strand Larsen on the right side.
With a deft touch, the striker held the ball up and then stepped into Lemina’s path. Gomes’s magical moment occurred in the area without the Brazilian having to touch the ball.
Gomes mesmerised Newcastle’s defence with his dummy before Lemina’s goal, and Paul Merson showered the midfielder with plaudits.
In response to the goal during the game on Sky Sports, Merson drew a connection between Lionel Messi and Gomes at that precise time.
As she praised Gomes, Merson exclaimed, “That is unbelievable.”
We would be going crazy if Messi did that. It’s amazing in every way.
It was regrettable for Wolves to lose against Newcastle.
Wolves gave it their all to win, and even Newcastle would have felt lucky to have left Molineux with the victory.
The Old Gold continue to hunt for their first victory of the season as two spectacular strikes and missed opportunities proved to be the difference between the two teams.
O’Neil acknowledged that, aside from Barnes’ game-winning goal in the 80th minute, the defence had let him down, but overall, Wolves’ performance left him with very little cause for criticism.
The Midlands club’s next match is a derby against Aston Villa, which is played away. Three points would make a statement against Unai Emery’s high-fliers.
There’s not much evidence to suggest that Wolves can’t win against the Villans following their loss to Newcastle, since their performance speaks louder than the score.
