The 27-year-old midfield player dubbed “Beast Mode” was cut from the Lions roster in 2023 after failing to make an impression on the senior squad.

But among the more than fifty former AFL players who have submitted nominations for the mid-season draft is the Lions cult icon.

Based on his pictures on social media, Mathieson appears to have been putting in a lot of time in the gym to add muscle to his already well-built physique.

Rhys Mathieson, a former player for the Brisbane Lions, underwent an incredible bodily change after being dropped from the AFL last year.

With the AFL mid-season draft, Mathieson hopes to return to the top division.

He appears to be a totally different player than the one who played in 2023 in a recent Instagram photo of him playing football that has gotten more than 5000 likes.

Mitch Robinson, Mathieson’s close friend and former teammate, has offered insights on his remarkable physical transformations.

“Very impressive, my friend!” he wrote in response to a post. On another, he scribbled, “Yeah the beast.”

Fans of football also reacted favourably to Beast Mode’s dramatic makeover.

“This guy isn’t even in the AFL,” an Instagram user wrote.

A second person joked, “Bro took delisting personally.”

A third person said, “No one is tackling you.”

It was announced earlier this year that Mathieson had committed to the 2024 season with the Wilston Grang Gorillas of the QAFL.

Since the end of the previous season, the former Lions player has been quite busy in the gym.

The team wrote on social media, “All Gorillas supporters will be excited to see how Rhys rips the QAFL competition apart—in perhaps the biggest signing in our clubs rich history.”

This off-season, Matho’s signature has garnered the most attention nationwide.

“Since we were based north of Brisbane and planned to stay there, the QAFL competition began to appeal as a travel destination.” After meeting the Gorillas, Matho is thrilled with the playing group’s trajectory, impressed with the programme offered, and believes the Gorillas are the ideal fit.
