UNBREAKABLE :The Manchester City draw guarantees that Reading FC’s record stays

Manchester City’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday ensures that Reading will remain record holders for another year.

Back in 1985/86, the Royals won their first 13 matches on route to picking up the Third Division title.

Blackpool, Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers, Cardiff City, Walsall, Rotherham United, Brentford, Swansea City, Doncaster Rovers, Chesterfield, Bolton Wanderers, Newport County and Lincoln City were all unable to take a point off Ian Branfoot’s side from August until October.

Wolverhampton Wanderers held the Royals to a 2-2 draw at Elm Park on October 23 in the 14th fixture, the first time Reading dropped points all season.

Pep Guardiola’s City had won their opening four fixtures but needed a stoppage-time equaliser from John Stones to preserve their unbeaten start and remain top of the Premier League.

Although the Citizens have the record for the longest league-winning run from the start of a calendar year (13), the Royals will at least keep their record from the start of a season into its 40th season.

Arsenal, West Brom, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield United and Birmingham City remain unbeaten in their respective divisions but all have dropped points.

Branfoot’s men earned 94 points in 1985/86 and remained in Division Two until 1988, the year in which the club tasted Wembley glory in the Simod Cup.
