This post is a part of Football League World’s “The Verdict” series, in which FLW writers provide their own thoughts on the newest breaking news, teams, players, managers, possible signings, and other topics. Following Vincent Kompany’s unexpected transfer to Bayern Munich, Burnley is still without a manager. They also suffered a blow when it was announced that Ruud van Nistelrooy would probably be joining Manchester United. At the end of May, Kompany departed for the German powerhouses, giving the hierarchy weeks to intensify their search for a replacement.
Furthermore, it was reported last week that the Clarets had van Nistelrooy on their radar due to the Dutchman’s unemployment following his departure from PSV.
Ruud van Nistelrooy to join Man Utd
Van Nistelrooy is a well-known player in the league and had a successful track record with the Eredivisie squad, which includes winning the Dutch Cup. On paper, it seemed like a solid fit for Burnley.
Man Utd has made an attempt to get the former striker, though, and van Nistelrooy will be working with Erik ten Hag in his backroom group at Old Trafford.
Since that route appears to be blocked, Burnley is once again searching for a new manager, and Corberan has reportedly been considered. The current West Brom manager has performed admirably at this level with the Baggies, and while he was in Yorkshire, he brought Huddersfield Town to within one game of the Premier League.
Despite a lackluster stint at Olympiacos, Corberan has established a solid reputation in English football and has been connected to the Leicester City position. Is Corberan the best target Burnley has now that van Nistelrooy is out of the picture? Our contributors express their opinions here.

Burnley would be excited about this appointment, although it should be emphasized that there is no assurance he will quit Albion. Because of the strength in Burnley’s team, you would support Corberan to win promotion if he did assume the lead because of his outstanding resume at this level. Against all odds, the Spaniard led Huddersfield to a play-off final. Although they were unfortunate that day, it’s important to remember that a few crucial decisions went against them.
Albion was the subject of obviously higher expectations, but I believe his contributions have not received enough recognition outside of The Hawthorns. Even if that would alter under Shilen Patel, Corberan had little money to deal with because he had never purchased a player for a transfer fee throughout his tenure with the Baggies. There aren’t many true limitations at Burnley, and he’ll take over a team that most people believe is among the top two or three in the Championship. His playing style, perhaps the only thing to be concerned about, is that he was more circumspect against Huddersfield and Albion. Also, the Clarets would undoubtedly prefer an offensive-minded coach to continue building on Kompany’s accomplishments from the previous several years.
You may counter that he works with the team he has and that if he gets to Turf Moor, there’s no reason he won’t change and adopt a more progressive mindset. There are other options, and Craig Bellamy seems like a risk worth taking, but Burnley made a very wise choice if Corberan is selected.
