Ipswich Town, still searching for their first Premier League win, have received a boost with George Hirst set to make his debut of the season.

Ipswich, managed by Kieran McKenna, had a tough start with matches against Liverpool and Manchester City, showing promising moments but ultimately falling short. Their 1-1 draw against Fulham was particularly disappointing as they failed to secure a win in a game they needed to win to avoid relegation.

Now, with an eye on improving their attacking options alongside Liam Delap, McKenna has confirmed that Hirst is in line to make his first Premier League appearance this weekend against Brighton & Hove Albion. Hirst returns to the squad after recovering from an injury sustained in a pre-season match against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Kieran McKenna provided an update on Ipswich Town’s injury situation, revealing that Wes Burns and George Hirst have trained with the team this week. Harry Clarke, who has been recovering from Achilles surgery, also joined the group briefly for the first time.

When asked about Burns and Hirst’s potential involvement against Brighton, McKenna said: “It’s not impossible. They’ve both trained with the group for most of the week and are ahead of schedule. They’re both feeling really good. We’ll make the right decision, not just for this weekend but long-term, and won’t take any unnecessary risks. As of now, they’re available for the squad.”

Hirst, while not expected to score over 15 goals a season, brings a crucial physical presence to Ipswich’s attack, which has been lacking so far this season. Earning a reported £28,000-a-week, the 25-year-old has the chance to demonstrate his value upon his return from injury.

McKenna praised Hirst’s role, stating: “The role he plays leading the line is unique. Few strikers who are 6’3 can stretch the game and run behind like he does. He’s worked hard to improve his build-up play, holding off defenders, and connecting with midfielders. His contributions in set plays and overall development are very important to our team.”
