Reo Hatate is a player I hold in high regard. His abundant talent adds a creative spark to our midfield, particularly in the SPFL where teams regularly attempt to stifle us. Reo can change a game with a single pass or shot, and he’s a proven match-winner deserving of his place in the squad. However, with the recent arrivals of Arne Engels and Luke McCowan, questions have begun to arise about his position in the starting lineup.

Reo again put in a lacklustre performance against Hearts. He looked a little off form as he did against theRangers, although as far as Saturday’s game goes, it could be that the travelling involved in international duty with Japan could have had an affect, as Daizen Maeda also looked a little jaded against Hearts.

Personally, I think a midfield trio of Callum McGregor, Paulo Bernardo, and Arne Engels would provide a stronger foundation against a well-organized opponent like Slovan. Reo could always be called upon if needed, so a stint on the bench might be the best option for him, starting on Wednesday night. It’s a tough decision, but one Brendan Rodgers will handle without issue when deciding his Champions League midfield lineup.
