According to talkSPORT, Southampton is requesting Flynn Downes and £10 million in exchange for Kyle Walker-Peters being sold to West Ham United.
The news outlet claims on its website (10 July) that talks between the Saints and Hammers are still ongoing on a deal that would see the full-back transfer to east London, with Downes remaining at St Mary’s following a successful loan season the previous year.
Ben Johnson signed a £60k per week contract with Ipswich [Times, June 27], while Downes has previously stated he wants to return to Southampton. Julen Lopetegui wants to bolster his full-back options.
Kyle Walker-Peters to be traded to West Ham United
Although swap agreements aren’t very frequent in sports, West Ham and Southampton have a history of working out agreements that satisfy both sides.
Everyone was thrilled when the Hammers signed James Ward-Prowse last year, and Downes moved the other way on loan.
Although Downes had a difficult season in his one and only season at the London Stadium, he has established himself as an important member of Russell Martin’s lineup; however, this summer, a new full-back is required to compete with Vladimir Coufal and Emerson.
Walker-Peters’ contract expires in June 2025, but Downes’ is still under contract until 2027, thus paying £10 million more for Downes is probably going to be considered pricey.
But Walker-Peters is already proved, and Downes isn’t going to succeed with the Irons. It is an agreement that benefits all parties, and Tim Steidten ought to think about completing it as soon as possible.
