West Ham needs to brace themselves for Flynn Downes’ departure this summer following recent updates from Southampton.
Southampton has shown a strong interest in securing a permanent deal for Downes, who impressed during his season-long loan with the club.
At 25, Downes played a crucial role in Russell Martin’s team, which achieved promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. The player also appears willing to remain with the Saints【Daily Echo, 13 May】.
Southampton might have created space for Downes at St Mary’s Stadium by releasing their official retained list for the 2024/25 season, which includes the departure of Adam Armstrong.
While Downes and Armstrong play different roles, the Saints’ likely defensive strategy as a newly promoted team could favor Downes’ inclusion in the squad.
Given Southampton’s keen interest, Julen Lopetegui may not get the opportunity to work with Downes before he leaves West Ham permanently.
West Ham United should prepare for Flynn Downes’ exit.
Downes made 31 league starts, becoming an essential player in Martin’s team that secured Premier League promotion.
After a decent first season at London Stadium following his transfer from Swansea City in July 2022, he was loaned out by David Moyes—a decision the club might now regret.
This move wasn’t the most puzzling, though. It left Edson Alvarez as Moyes’ only true defensive midfielder, leading to Kalvin Phillips being loaned in during the January transfer window.
The Manchester City player’s attempt to revive his career was unsuccessful, which could be seen as an insult to Downes.
If they haven’t started already, West Ham needs to begin preparing for Downes’ departure.
