Although there have been rumors that Newcastle is keen to sign with Crystal Palace, they have now had four bids turned down while sporting director Paul Mitchell looks at other options.
Guehi is rumored to be amenable to the notion of moving to St. James’ Park, but the team hasn’t been able to put together a package that would persuade Palace to sell.
After all, their chairman Steve Parish stated that the Eagles were pursuing “superstar money” for the England defender and that Newcastle hasn’t been able to meet that demand yet.
Even though it’s still uncertain if Newcastle will end the negotiations, new information from behind the scenes has already surfaced.
Newcastle is informed by Crystal Palace Marc Guehi’s recent transfer
Why Newcastle won’t spend a lot of money on Marc Guehi
Not only would it be mildly embarrassing to not sign the player Newcastle has placed such a high value on at this point in the transfer window, but it would also leave little time to find a replacement.
The price is, of course, the sticking point.
According to reports, Newcastle feels that Palace’s asking price, which is apparently between £65 and £70 million, is simply too much for a player who is about to enter the last two years of his contract.
That makes sense, to be sure, but it begs the issue of why, if they don’t plan to match the valuation in any case, they’re pushing so hard with fees that are only marginally below it.
