Will Still’s decision has placed a former Leeds United assistant as the unexpected front-runner for the Sunderland position.

The Black Cats concluded the 2023–2024 season with a caretaker in charge, therefore they are currently searching for a new head coach. After Michael Beale was fired, Mike Dodds filled in for a while; he had done the same after Tony Mowbray was fired. Will Still, the former manager of Reims, was strongly linked to a transfer to the Stadium of Light, but he is reportedly set to take over at Lens in the top division of French football.

Thus, former Leeds coach Maric is the new front-runner at 2/1 on BetVictor. The 31-year-old served as assistant head coach at Elland Road under Jesse Marsch’s leadership.

Unlike his former colleague, he left after Marsch was fired, but he hasn’t stopped being at the dugout. As head coach of Bayern Munich’s under-19 team, he is now employed there.

Despite his role in Marsch’s turbulent time at Leeds, Maric enjoys a stellar reputation throughout Europe and is regarded as one of the best up-and-coming coaches. Liam Rosenior is one of the outside candidates farther down the list of front-runners. Hull City fired Rosenior at the conclusion of the 2023–2024 season. Tim Walter, who most recently managed Hamburg, has taken over at the MKM Stadium.
