At Rangers right now, Thomas Galdames’ name is all the rage. The Gers were linked to the 25-year-old Chilean defender almost as soon as those prominent connections to Jose Cordoba were dispelled.
Rangers are reportedly vying with “teams in Belgium” for the signature of Thomas Galdames, who is currently playing in Argentina. Galdames, who made Chile’s preliminary Copa America roster, will reportedly playing his final game for his current team, Godoy Cruz, this week. Galdames has always played left-back for the Argentines, so there has been some discussion about what position he would play at Ibrox given the connection to the adaptable defender.
However, the most recent contract news from the team has shown that Rangers likely intend to use the 6-foot-8 Chilean a little more centrally.
Rangers line up two-year left back deal
The Rangers left-back position is going through a fascinating moment, given the connections to Thomas Galdames.
Finally, Rangers supporters are starting to see glimpses of what the injured Ridvan Yilmaz can bring to the position. Brazilian striker Jefte has recently joined the team under Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen, just as Borna Barisic, a Croatian veteran, is getting ready to move to Turkey. Rangers now have two senior options at the position, and that doesn’t even count for the young player whose outstanding debut we saw before the year came to an end. Robbie Fraser played his first minutes for the Rangers in the 4-1 victory over Dundee at Ibrox after coming off the bench.
The Rangers Review now claims that the 21-year-old is ready to sign a two-year contract extension at Ibrox with the goal of making even more progress into the starting lineup the following campaign.
Galdames to be Rangers’ new centre-back?
Although the story acknowledges that Ridvan Yilmaz, who was linked to Galatasaray in January, would be of interest, we don’t think Thomas Galdames is being signed as one of four left-backs. Yilmaz is not being pursued at this time, and Rangers are obviously looking for a left-sided central defender. Galdames might benefit from a similar positional change as well, since the left-back has more offensive ability and could be a valuable addition to the back line.
Just having a competent and adaptable left-sided defender on his team will no doubt make Philippe Clement delighted. However, until he signs Galdames this summer, we won’t know how the Rangers boss plans to use the center-back.
