Sunderland’s Championship rivals are closing in on a surprise managerial appointment
It is possible that Wayne Rooney will make an unexpected comeback to the Championship bench, despite leaving Birmingham City two months ago. As Plymouth Argyle looks to name a long-term replacement for Ian Foster, Rooney has emerged as the front-runner to take over. After Steven Schumacher moved to Stoke City, the former England youth manager took over as head coach. However, the team was led by first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and director of football Neil Dewsnip in the final weeks of the season as they just survived relegation.
Now that he is ramping up his search for a new head coach, Newsnip is reportedly anxious to appoint Rooney, whom he knows well from his stint as Everton’s Academy boss. In the upcoming days, more discussions are anticipated.
Paul Heckingbottom, who was mentioned in connection with Sunderland’s opening early in the season, has also been in discussions for the position and may yet be considered. Heckingbottom is reportedly of interest to Birmingham City as well. Tony Mowbray resigned earlier this week for health-related reasons, and the club is currently in the process of selecting his replacement. Additionally, it is said that Alex Neil had preliminary discussions that may continue in the upcoming days and weeks.
During his first management position at Derby County, Rooney performed admirably under trying circumstances. However, his tenure at St Andrews was unpleasant, and he was fired less than three months into his three-and-a-half year contract. Birmingham was subsequently demoted to League One.
