Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has raised doubts about the effectiveness of the video assistant referee (VAR) system after Max Kilman’s disallowed goal in their recent 2-1 loss to West Ham. Kilman’s late header was disallowed due to his teammate Tawanda Chirewa being offside and obstructing the view of West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
Manager Gary O’Neil criticized it as one of the worst decisions he’s seen, while Shi questioned whether remote VAR decisions align with the spirit of football. Despite Wolves’ frustrations, they’ve faced several contentious decisions this season. Shi stressed that not a single person in the stadium questioned Kilman’s goal’s legitimacy.
He urged the Premier League and officiating body PGMOL to address these concerns to maintain the competition’s integrity. Shi also noted that without these incorrect or contentious decisions, Wolves would be in a better league position.
