Wolverhampton Wanderers have clarified that they are not the Premier League club involved in the arrest of two players for alleged rape.
Wolves issued a statement “in order to protect the welfare of our young players” in response to what they called “inappropriate online speculation” about the names of two 19-year-olds detained before being freed on bail.
During Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal, the team had several players of that age on the bench.
They stated: “A newspaper item published yesterday sparked unwarranted internet speculation about the identity of two people purportedly under police investigation.
“While we would not typically comment on ongoing police matters, in order to protect the welfare of our young players, we feel it is necessary to confirm that the allegations do not relate to anyone at Wolves.”
The club involved in the police inquiry, whose identity is known to Telegraph Sport, declined to comment on Wednesday over the suspension of the two arrested players.
According to The Sun, one of the teens was questioned inside the club’s stadium on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting rape. He was then formally apprehended after fleeing the scene, imprisoned overnight, and questioned under caution.
The second footballer was arrested the next day and questioned by police on suspicion of rape.
“Officers have arrested two men following a report of rape,” the police force stated in a statement. “A 19-year-old guy has been arrested on accusations of assault and aiding and abetting rape. A second 19-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of rape. Both men have now been released on police bail.”
The alleged rape was reported on Friday night, and the claimed victim called police several hours later before filing a formal complaint.
According to a spokeswoman for the players’ club, “As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the club will not be making further comment at this stage.”
At the start of this season, Telegraph Sport reported that a Premier League player at the focus of a separate rape allegation had been advised by police that he would begin a second season under investigation.
The established international was first apprehended at a north London location in 2022 and “released under investigation.”
Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United striker, is among several footballers who have been arrested on suspicion of or attempted rape. Charges of attempted rape and assault against him were later dropped. Following an internal investigation, he left Old Trafford by mutual arrangement to spend the season on loan with Getafe in Spain.
Former Manchester City full-back Benjamin Mendy was cleared of rape and now plays for Lorient in France.
