Writer for Indianapolis Star Stopped Covering Indiana Fever Season Due to Predatory Remark About Caitlin Clark

Gregg Doyel, the journalist for the Indy Star, has decided not to cover the Indiana Fever’s WNBA season after making lewd remarks about Caitlin Clark during her first press conference on April 17.

Gregg Doyel, the sports columnist for the Indianapolis Star, will not be covering the Indiana Fever, an Indy Star spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap.

Former Indy Star writer Bob Kravitz said on his Substack that Gannett, the owners of the Star, suspended Doyel for two weeks and forbade him from going to Indiana Fever games this season. He may still cover the team, though, by staying home to watch the games. According to local media reports, Doyel’s suspension expires on May 13 and his last published story was published on April 29.

In line with corporate policy, Gannett refrained from commenting further on Doyel’s behavior.

Doyel questioned Clark about her heart-hands gesture, which she frequently displays, which led to the events of April 17. He was suspended because of the reporter’s remark in response to her answer.

After every game, Clark said, “Yeah, I do that at my family,” to which Doyel retorted, “Start doing it to me and we’ll get along just fine.”

Bob Iger revealed that Disney+ will webcast Clark’s debut WNBA game, coinciding with the news. ESPN2 and ESPN+ will also stream the game on May 14 versus the Connecticut Sun.
